"play it by ear" 是一個很重要的短語。最初是說大鋼琴家會即興演湊一段“仙樂”， 根本不用看樂譜。"play it by ear",就是只用耳朵，不用看樂譜。如果做事兒也擺 脫了樂譜，那么意思就是“隨機應變”。

其實大家不用擔心。要是John沒有兩把刷子早就被老板趕回家了。老板之所以這樣寵他， Because he is only playing at his job. play his job.是說玩他的工作嗎，好像不 是吧。其實是指"應付了事"的意思。He is only playing at his job. play his job 這句話是說"他對工作只是應付了事，不認真"而已。
John is only playing at his job in the company, for he is much more interested in being a racing driver.(John對于公司的工作沒有興趣。他想當一名賽車手)。也 難怪老板要找他談話呢。
其實John也很不開心，因為他對公司的工作根本就不感興趣。于是他最終離開了公司。 拎著背包去尋找夢想了。有朋友對他說你這樣做太不負責任了，是應付人生。But John said :"I am not playing at it this time; that is my dream of my whole life."(但是John說這次我可以沒有應付了事，因為這是我一生的夢想。)
