老子《道德經》英譯第十七章

　　【原文】

　　太上，不知有之;其次，親而譽之;其次，畏之;其次，侮之。

　　信不足焉，有不信焉。

　　悠兮其貴言。功成事遂，百姓皆謂：我自然。

　　【現代漢語】

　　最好的國家政治形態是人民根本感覺不到管理、統治者的存在;其次一等的形態是，人民愿意親近并贊美統治者;更次一等則是人民畏懼統治者;最次一等的是人民厭惡、憎恨統治者。

　　統治階層的誠信不足是導致人民不信任它的根本原因。

　　最好的政治形態中，統治者與人民悠然并存，絕不輕易發號施令。國家事務井井有條，百姓都說：“我們本來就是這樣的。”

　　【譯文】

　　The people of the state do not know that there is the rulers and governor in the first-class political structure; in the secondary class, people love them and praise them; in inferior people be in feared of them; in inferior people despise and hat them.

　　The governor has not good faith is the basic reason why people do not trust in them.

　　In the first-class political structure, the governor gets along with people easily and never issue orders inconsiderately. But, the national affairs are all in perfect order at the same time. The people all said, 'We are as we are, of ourselves!'

　　之所以崇敬老子、仰慕老子，崇拜老子，還有一個很重要的原因——多少有一點烏托邦的色彩，但我覺得天下大同，一定會實現的。在人類真正認識了自己在大自然中的角色，并能默默扮演這一角色、承擔這一角色所應承擔的責任的時候，而且是所有人都能這樣的時候。

　　我滿懷信心地期待著，每一個人其實都應有如此期待。
