① only可用作副詞或形容詞。作副詞時，only意為“僅僅，只是”；作形容詞時，only意為“唯一的”。比較：

She only likes war novels. 她只喜歡戰爭小說。（副詞）

This is my only bike. 這是我唯一的一輛自行車。（形容詞）

He is an only child. 他是個獨生子。（形容詞）

② only作副詞用時，通常表示強調，修飾哪個詞，往往就放在哪個詞之前，位置不同，表示的意義也不同。

Only he lent the bike to her. 只有他把自行車借給她。（別人不借，強調主語）

He only lent the bike to her. 他只是把自行車借給她。（不是送給她，強調謂語動詞）
